Snug as a bug
Get your house ready for winter with a seasonal check-up
Protect one of your biggest investments! Spend a Saturday afternoon getting your home in shape for winter. Here are a few fall chores that will take you from the attic to the basement and get your home winter-ready.
Extend the life of your outdoor furniture. Clean and store your outdoor chairs, tables and cushions in a garage or crawlspace if you have room, or cover them up with protective slipcovers if you have to leave them out. While you are down in the basement putting away your lawn furniture, check your hot water heater. Your tank could be building up sediment if you live in a hard water area. Drain your tank and check for rust and buildup. Consider an energy-efficient replacement if your tank is aging.
Finish your yard work. Cool fall weather is great for planting roses and seeding the lawn. Trees are easier to trim once all those pesky leaves have dropped. When you are finished with the yard work for the season, put away your hose and gardening tools. Before the first frost, turn off your outdoor faucet and disconnect and store the hose. Give your gardening tools an end-of-season cleaning.
Have a look at your roof and keep your gutters clean. Clear leaves and dirt from your gutters and check your downspouts for damage. You can do this yourself if you feel safe on a ladder, or hire a local gardening or roofing worker to have a look for you. While you are up there, check for any loose shingles or wear and tear to the chimney. Before you light your first cozy fire, be sure to clean your chimney or have it professionally swept.
